From Endurance to Empowerment: Unveiling Women’s Defiance in Khaled Hosseini’s Selected Novels
Khaled Hosseini has emerged as one of the leading novelists who have made a significant contribution to the portrayal of marginalized women against the backdrop of patriarchal hegemony prevalent in Afghan society. This article investigates how Hosseini’s literary representation transcends the reduction of Afghan women as mere victims, scrutinizing the acts of resistance displayed by his female characters, as they negotiate, contest and challenge the oppressive systems of gendered oppression. Based on the extensive study of Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed through a feminist lens, this study explores how the masculine members of the represented households exert social, mental, moral, and physical dominance over women .Analyzing the structural and physical defiance of female characters this study demonstrates how Hosseini comes to the rescue of the women belonging to his homeland, Afghanistan, exposing their resistance and ultimate journey towards self-esteem and individuality.
